In order to strengthen the knowledge base developed in the classroom and improve the practical understanding of the students, the College of Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST), in collaboration with the College of International Cooperative Education (CICE), arranged an educational visit to LHNP located in Wafangdian City, Liaoning Province of P. R. China, on 4th July 2024, in which around forty students of Doctoral and Masters degree programs of CNST participated enthusiastically.
The LHNP site has six operating Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) constructed in two phases. The construction work of the first phase, consisting of four units of CPR-1000 design began in August 2007 and all four units, having a net capacity of around 4.25 GW, were ready by June 2016 and are providing the clean energy to the grid to date. The second phase, consisting of two ACPR-1000 units, designed in-house by China based on CPR-1000 experience and having intellectual property rights, was completed in June 2022. With the addition of Units- 5 and 6, the station's gross installed capacity has increased to 6.71 GW.
First of all, the students were taken to the exhibition hall, where they were briefed regarding operational aspects as well as various construction milestones like concreting of nuclear island (NI), dome placement, and installation of electrical generator at Hongyanhe NPPs. The mockups of reactor and turbine buildings demonstrating the working of major components gained the special attention of the students. Later, the students were led to the Full Scale Training Simulator (FSTS) of Units 1 & 2, where they were introduced to the Main Control Room (MCR) of NPP and the rigorous licensing process of the control room personnel. Finally, students visited the vocational training center of the NPP and were familiarized with various equipment like valves, pumps, motors, etc.
At the special request of the students, LHNP management allowed them to make a short visit to the beach adjacent to the NPP site. In the end, students expressed their gratitude for providing such a unique opportunity, furnishing satisfactory responses to the queries during the entire visit, and for the hospitality extended by the company.
