It was a memorable day for the new international student of Grade 2018 in the College of Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST), Harbin Engineering University (HEU) as the college hosted its new student to the CNST-HEU Family on October 25, 2018 in a well-organized welcome occasion.
The ceremony took place at room 370 of building 31 in the College.
The meeting was officiated by Professor GAO Puzhen, the Vice Dean of the college who doubles to be Host. The Dean of CNST, the Vice Director of Graduate School, the Project Officer at the International Office, the Vice-Dean of the College of International Cooperative Education were the Invited Guest of honor.
Other attendees were representatives of the College of Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST), CNST Teaching Affairs Office, CNST Teachers, CNST international students of grade 2018.
The college admitted 34 New International students for both Master’s and Doctor Degrees under the AES award for the 2018/2019 academic year.
The opening ceremony:
At about 14:00 hr, the Host, Professor Gao Puzhen welcomed the new students and introduced the invited guests and staff of the college present. In her welcome address, she spoke about the college and stated the various achievements recorded which has promoted the college over time and recently the college is listed for the AES scholarship of which the new students happened to be the first set of awardees.
The invited guests took time to address the new student.
First was The Dean of the college, Prof XIA Hong who in her Address, congratulated the new students and expressed happiness in their interest in the area of nuclear science and technology and assured them of the college readiness to ensure a hinge free research and enabling working environment for their studies in the College.
Miss YIN Hua (Rebekka), the Project Officer of the International Office introduced the work of the international students at HEU and again congratulated the new awardees on the success of their application stating that the process of selection was highly competitive. She further advised the new intake to take the opportunity as a special for having the privilege to learn in such a prestigious University.
The Vice-Director of Graduate School, Professor YANG Piaoping spoke on what is expected of the new students during their research period in the school and encouraged them to take every bit of it very serious.
Next was the Cultivate faculty, teachers’ and students’ speech.
Introducing the responsibilities of the college, training and management of international students, Vice-Dean of the College of International Cooperative Education (CICE), Professor DING Xuezhong urged the new student to take advantage of the various services available in the CICE and take part in other activities, such as extracurricular activities, participation in student societies, exchange experiences as they are an inseparable part of university life. These opportunities will expose students to the world outside academia and is an integral part of the process of growing up. He further assured them that they are always welcome to the office.
Thereafter, the Vice Dean of CNST, Professor GAO Puzhen took time to introduce the graduate programs in the college. First, she introduced the PhD programs by explaining the allowable credit loads and the courses to be selected in accordance with the various area of research interest but urged the students to seek the consent of their supervisor in the selection of appropriate courses. She further stated the minimal requirements in terms of paper publications and journals before submission of final dissertation. Then she mentioned that the Master’s program requires them take all available courses as such courses has already been tailored to meet the requirements. While she advised the publication of a paper by the master’s students, she mentioned that it is not compulsory but a comprehensive final project is mandatory to meet the requirement for graduation.
Doctor WANG Xiang spoke on behalf of the teaching staff of CNST. In his speech, he assured the students the readiness of all staff of the college, that they are more than willing to help the students in the area of their academics and researches.
On behalf of the new International Student, Mr VINOD Kumar from Pakistan, a Master’s Degree new intake, expressed his gratitude to the school. He stated his motivation on the reasons he chose the school, what he intended to achieve during the period of study and concluded by stating many exciting things about the host country.
The representative of the international students in the college, Mr ABIODUN Samuel from Nigeria, a final year PhD student shared his experiences and enjoys the student to convert every perceive challenges into an opportunity such that they will have learnt from experiences of the students before them so as not to make the same mistakes some of them made. He concluded by stating that the host institution is a place having a free, open and diverse learning environment, and wished the new international student a wonderful time.
Another highlight of the event was the wearing of the HEU Badges. The new students were grouped and excitedly, they took turns to get their badge from the already waiting Guests of honor.
Thereafter, opportunity was given for students to ask questions and answered where provided by the capable teachers.
A group photo by all attendees was captured which officially brought the meeting to a close but thereafter a tour of all the CNST laboratories was conducted, to expose the new students to the available facilities in the college.
