On April 13, 2018, College of Nuclear Science and Technology (CNST) in collaboration with College of International Cooperative Education (CICE), Harbin Engineering University (HEU) organized an educational excursion for International students to the Institute of Technical Physics (ITP); Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences (HAS). A group of 23 foreign students along with a number of faculty members CNST including vice dean of CICE visited this facility.

The Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences (HAS) is a comprehensive natural science research institution directly subordinate to the provincial government. Founded in 1958 - Heilongjiang Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It mainly develops application foundation, strategic high technology, and key public scientific research. Currently it is considered one of the modern scientific research institute system since it has played a key role in the province's scientific and technological innovative progress. Institute of Technical Physics is one of the various Technology Research Institutes of HAS.

The Institute of Technical Physics of the Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences was formerly known as the Heilongjiang Institute of Nuclear Physics. In 1972 it  was officially renamed Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences Technology The Institute of Physics as a public institution.

The  group was welcomed by the director of ITP along with some faculty members. The director imparted useful information regarding the historical background of the institute. He informed about the proud excellence of the institute mentioning name of some prominent figures produced by ITP who have played significant role in various fields of Physics.

The group was taken to conference room where the Director ITP Zhao Hongtao and vice dean CICE-HEU Ding Xuezhong exchanged views regarding the ongoing multiple research projects of mutual collaboration between the  two institutes. A formal brief  describing various functions, resources and application of the ITP was given by the deputy director Zhao Xiaowen.  

 Then the group proceeded to observe various labs and facilities present in ITP under the supervision of the ITP faculty members. First of all the group was shown the Key Lab of nuclear technology application. The ITP instructor explained about the structure, working and function of various equipment for radiation shielding and detection present in the lab. 

Next the group visited the Cobalt source irradiation center. Currently it has nuclear equipment: two Cobalt-60 irradiation devices (50,000 and 100,000 Curie) used for medical irradiation applications.

Afterwards group arrived at the accelerator lab. Presently it is the only high-frequency high-voltage electron accelerator in the whole province (DD-1.2, 1.25MeV, 1mA) .Dr. Zhongyu Li of CNST explained the function of accelerator based radiation application.

Later group was taken to nuclear security and high energy chemical lab. The ITP instructor explained their current nuclear security applications and magnetron sputtering.

The ITP is promoting research projects pertaining to scientific innovation technological progress regarding the key factors such as nuclear safety, radiation physics, nuclear detection technology and nuclear electronics in Heilongjiang Province. It plays a significant role in providing technical support to the “eight economic zones” and “ten industries” flourishing in Heilongjiang province, thus helping in its strategic, economic and social development.

    At the end of the visit the group along with the ITP faculty gathered in front of ITP main block for a memorable group photo before departure.

     CNST–HEU is always conducting such informative and useful excursion and activities for its students in order to provide them with better opportunities of learning.
