The WNU-THU Week 2023, held in Hengyang, China, marked a significant return to in-person meetings for the global nuclear community after the COVID-19 pandemic. Organized by the World Nuclear University (WNU) in partnership with Tsinghua University (THU), this annual event provided a crucial platform for young nuclear professionals to connect with experts worldwide. Notably, five Ph.D. students from the College of Nuclear Science and Technology at Harbin Engineering University, fully supported by their institution, participated in the event.
A panel of international and Chinese experts, including Sama Bilbao Leon (Director General, WNA) and Abel Julio Gonzalez (Senior Advisor, Argentine Nuclear Regulation Authority), engaged in discussions covering diverse nuclear topics, from the future of nuclear energy to the application of artificial intelligence in the industry. Participants also had the opportunity to visit important nuclear facilities, witnessing nuclear science in action, including medical applications.
The event culminated in group presentations, where Dedzie Samuel Yao and Ashhar Bilal from Harbin Engineering University achieved an impressive 2nd place among nine groups. Overall, WNU-THU Week 2023 underscored its role as a global gathering of nuclear professionals, facilitating knowledge exchange and collaboration in Hengyang, China.
